The Essential Features of the Rambo Survival Knife

The design of the Rambo knife is based on the survival knives that were used in the era of the Vietnam War. The idea behind designing knives similar to the Rambo survival knife was that it could be carried by the pilots; in case, their planes crashed or went down due to some failure, the pilots could use the survival knife for cutting off the seatbelts and getting out of their planes. Now if we look at the film of Rambo "First Blood", we can see him wielding his popular big-sized survival knife which is much larger than the survival knives which were originally used by the pilots during the Vietnam War. The design of the Rambo survival knife is similar with the only difference being in the size of the Rambo knife.

The versions of the Rambo survival knife used during his first two movies were more or less same with regards to design and form disregarding the minor differences. However, in the last two Rambo movies, the audience witnessed a major shift with regards to the design, shape, and size of the iconic Rambo survival knife. The unique designs of the Rambo survival knife in the last two movies is evident from the fact that Rambo wields a Bowie knife in the third movie; whereas, in the fourth movie, he (Rambo) carries a small-sized handmade weapon resembling a machete.

The Design of the Rambo Survival Knife

The Rambo survival knife comprises a gray blade (sand-blast) while the knife is made of stainless steel. The knife blade comprises a rather sharp tip; however, above the blade of the Rambo survival knife, there are at least 13 teeth (serrated) which can be effectively used to cut and slice through any of the hard objects, such as barbed wire, wood, and metal objects.

On the bottom of the handle of the Rambo survival knife, we can see a small compass which has been wrapped with a nylon cord which is of green color. Additionally, the green nylon cord which is being wrapped around the handle can be used in the form of a thread as well. It is important to note here that the handle of the Rambo survival knife is essentially hollow; whereas, the compass is located on the inside of the handle cap. You might use the outside for the breaking of glass in an urgent and life-threatening situation.

The Film "First Blood" and the Rambo Survival Knife

In the film "First Blood" we see Rambo making an effective us of his survival knife. Initially, he is arrested by the Sheriff for carrying a concealed knife after the latter pats Rambo down in search of some weapon. Subsequently, we see Rambo preferring his survival knife above other weapons, such as guns. Initially, Rambo declares to be carrying his survival knife for hunting sake. However, later we see him using his survival knife for a variety of other tasks as well.  After retrieving his survival knife from the Sheriff, Rambo realizes that he is able to do more with his survival knife in a discreet manner as compared to the firearms and other tools.

Rambo makes effective use of his survival knife when he hunts down a wild boar. Rambo also uses the same knife against a Guardsman while he succeeds in hijacking the truck for driving back into the town and completing his mission if stealing the M60 so he can rip up the main boulevard. The Rambo survival knife is eventually seized by law enforcement during his arrest. However, we can see Rambo appearing with a different version of the Rambo survival knife in each of the following films after the "First Blood".

Despite the fact that the novel never contained a hint of Rambo carrying a survival knife, the films depict Rambo as a character who relies for nearly everything on his survival knife. Resultant, the Rambo survival knife has now become a trademark for the character; realizing this, the director of the films made Rambo carry a survival knife in each of the films while each of the survival knives varied with regards to design. Now, you can find many replicas of the Rambo survival knife in the markets and online stores.
